The 50^th anniversary of independence for the former British possession of Malaya passed with little notice from the Australian press.  My query to a young Malaysian now resident in Sydney about the kind of celebrations we could expect to commemorate the occasion was answered with a shrug and what I sensed to be a lack of awareness as to the significance of the date.
