CAF visits the ICAC
A delegation of representatives from the Chinese Australian Forum met with investigators from the Independent Commission Against Corruption to discuss the recent prevalence of corruption cases involving Asian migrants.
In recent times there have been numerous mainstream media reports of Asian migrants trying to use bribery to exert influence or engage in corrupt behaviour.
To that end the Chinese Australian Forum led a delegation to meet with senior investigators from the ICAC.
CAF President Tony Pang and the accompanying committee members wanted to explore the possibilities for education new migrants about corrupt behaviour and the abuse of power.
Mr Pang said that the slew of recent cases involving people of Chinese descent was not a good look for the rest of the hundreds of thousands who obey the law each and every day.
“Firstly, we wanted to identify with the ICAC whether there really is an emerging problem of corruption stemming from the Chinese community, and if so, identify the steps we can take to stop it.”
Recent cases of alleged corruption include:
- A couple of Chinese background allegedly attempting to bribe a school teacher, in the hope that the teacher would be able to secure their child a place in a good high school.
- A woman of Chinese background allegedly attempting to pass over a package of money to a local council for assistance with development application approval.
- A man of South Asian background allegedly involved in corruption at Railcorp.
