Help China Earthquake Victims

Chinese Australian Forum wishes to advise members the below details for helping victims of the devastating earthquake in Sichuan and surrounding provinces. Urgent needs are for tents, blankets, clothing, easily cooked food and lighting equipment. Cash donation is the most effective way of getting help to the victims and all material can be locally sourced.

GOOD AUSPICES AS McKEW WOOS CHINESE VOTERS

ACCORDING to the ancient practice of feng shui, the seat of Bennelong is "the golden auspicious site" for new migrants. It is also considered "eye of the dragon".

The descriptions were reported in the Sydney Korean Society Bulletin last month and seized upon yesterday by Chinese Australian Forum president Tony Pang, who warned: "If the eye falls, everything will fall."

His comments were not lost on Labor's candidate for Bennelong, Maxine McKew, who is working to unseat John Howard in the Sydney electorate he has held since 1974.

LABOR'S McKEW ADDRESSES CHINESE FORUM

Labor candidate Maxine McKew openly admits to mumbling through parts of the national anthem, but says that doesn't make her less Australian.

It was an admission that drew respect from an audience predominantly of Chinese heritage who gathered, one of whom questioned Ms McKew on the current Australian citizenship test.

"I think our model of Australian citizenship has a lot more to do with what's in here than what we are writing on a piece of paper," Ms McKew said indicating to her heart while addressing members of the Chinese Australian Forum at Eastwood.

2007 CAF ANNUAL DINNER

CAF's Annual Dinner was held on 29 August 2007 with Mr Wayne Swan as the keynote speaker. Other distinguished guests who enjoyed the dinner with over 360 guests included Hon Laurie Brereton MP and Helen Sham Ho. Mr Swan spoke on the topic of "Labor's plans for the Future". In addition to Mr Swan's key note address, the night included a debate of a range of topical issues by 3 members of the young CAF committee: Justin Li, Justin Sing and Connie Tung.

CAF's President also addressed guests and spoke of the relevance and potential implications of the citizenship test to Australia's past and future. Dr Soo Keat's speech is available in the link below.

Other entertainment for the night included an auction of autographed books of Mr Swan and a raffle of a range of prizes including Nudie Juice, Versace, Dior, blackberry mobile phone/PDA.
